Beat Dry Skin This Spring

Spring is absolutely here – Aussie’s its definitely here! Even though some days are warm, I’m still freezing my butt off! So, I thought I’d round up the products that worked for me in beating the chills, in the hope that it works for you too!

Start from Within

If someone asks me to do a word association with spring, my first choice is usually “blocked nose” followed by “dehydrated skin” and “dry lips”. So, first things first – start from within. That means, up your hydration levels. Drink plenty of water and if you like ginger or honey, add it to your water for extra flavouring. Ginger and Honey help to build up immunity and fight the flu symptoms.

Look at your Environment

As Spring still has the Winter chills, it comes with a dry environment; frizz develops and so do the dry lips and dehydrated skin. Instead of running the heater non-stop, layer up. Instead of running really hot showers, which strips your skin and makes it super dry and flaky, turn down the heat a little. Also invest in a humidifier to get the moisture levels in your surroundings up. I’ve got a humidifier / steam inhaler combo gadget that my in-laws gifted me as I suffer quite bad sinus blocks. Which brings me to the next point.

Keep your Sinus Clear

A good steam inhale does wonders in opening up those blocked sinus cavities – especially comforting in winter. If you don’t have a steam inhaler, I would even suggest keeping aside a bowl specific to inhaling steam (ain’t nobody want to be eating from *THAT* bowl after the steam inhaling). A couple of drops of Eucalyptus oil or even Vicks will help to keep things clear.

A Warm Soak does Wonders

If you ARE hit by the dreaded later Winter flu, I found this really helped me cut my down time. Epsom salt bath with some ginger. Tired of being sick from the flu, I stumbled upon the ginger bath suggestions. At my wits end (and also needing some real “me” time), I decided to take the plunge (quite literally heh).

Fill the bath tub with warm water and add Epsom salts and grated ginger (I even used ground ginger when I ran out of the fresh variety and it gave me the same results). The Epsom salts draw out the toxins in your body and the ginger helps to detox. Note: during and even AFTER the bath, you’re going to sweat – A LOT. This is good.   If you’re allergic to ginger or can’t stand the smell of ginger, you can skip it and still use the Epsom salts. The best part is that you don’t need to spend hours in the tub, just 30 minutes is ideal.

Don’t Forget the Skincare

Hydrating Serums help with keeping the skin feeling supple and refreshed. One amazing product is the Dermaenergy Hydrate and Inflate EE Serum*. And twice a week, I also follow through with the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask.

I love a good facial oil so products like the Ausceuticals Marula oil* and the Murad Multivitamin Infusion Oil* do a wonderful job in locking the hydration.

Also too, the Murad Nutrient Charged Water Gel* is perfect to keep the skin looking fresh and rehydrated in winter.

One of major tells of the cold weather are cracked, dry, peeling lips. So scrub off all the dead layers away with a good lip scrub. The DB Cosmetics Lip scrubs* are vegan, cruelty free, affordable and come in a variety of colours and flavours. Follow through with tons of moisturiser – I use the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask to lock the moisture in.
Lastly, don’t forget the eyes. Crepey under eye bags can be kept at bay using the Hola Seaweed Moisturising Eye Cream. The gel like texture is soothing and here’s a tip: stick it in the fridge to keep under eye puffiness under control.

So that’s my round up of my arsenal for this Spring. Share your tips on how you beat the winter blues!
