GRWM:Soft Tonal Look

Hey everyone, today is the 14th of February. Which, to a lot of people means it’s the day to celebrate love. People will be dressing up and going out. So, for today’s post, I thought I’d get a soft tonal inspiration look for you.

This look is all about the diffused glow, the soft romantic shades, nothing too dramatic. The best part is that it is totally day friendly.

Before I even start the makeup, I’m going to get my skincare on. So, make sure you take special care in cleansing, toning, serum and moisturizing before you begin.

Before I start my base, I’m using a new primer I purchased – my YSL Touche Eclat blurring primer. This has beautiful gold flecks on it. I tried a sample of this primer for a week and I was completely smitten. So I purchased a full bottle. Give it a minute to set and then move to foundation. I’m using a combination of my L’oreal True Match foundation in 6N Honey and my Milani Conceal + Perfect foundation in 09 Tan. This brings the best of both worlds – the coverage and the shade of the Milani and the lightness of the L’Oreal foundation. I’m using my Real Techniques buffing brush to buff the foundation in and make sure the result is smooth and well blended on the skin. Use concealer to conceal blemishes, pimples, and any imperfections.

I’m using my favourite eye primer by the Balm cosmetics – my Put a Lid on It primer.

For the eyes, I’m going for a soft look. No heavy duty smoky eyes today. I’m grabbing a new purchase – the L’Oreal Colour Riche La palette in Nude Rose. I think the shades in this palette is perfect for the look I want to achieve today. Using the second lightest nude shade, I sweep it all over the lids and just into the crease. I’m using the Designer Brands eyeshadow blending brush for this. Using the same brush, grab the next deeper shade and tap off the excess, then concentrating in the crease of the eye, blend blend blend. Finally, using a flat shadow brush (or even your finger), take the lightest shadow and pat onto the center of your lid. This works at really brightening up the eyes.

For liner, I’m using a technique long hailed by my guru Tyra Banks – the nude pencil liner. I like to use a light hand and apply it in my waterline – this works to not only make your eyes pop and look wide awake, but also to combat the redness in your eye area and essentially make you look bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Next up, curl the lashes and apply coats of mascara. This is another new brand for me – say hello to the Shu Uemura lash curler. If you have light coloured lashes and you’re not into dark mascara for the day time, I would suggest using a clear mascara for this step. I’m going to be using my favourite – Milani Lash Trifecta mascara. It is lengthening and holds the curl beautifully.

I’m using the Rimmel Color Rush Balm in Keep Mauving. This shade is a good “my lips but better” shade for me. It’s balm like texture is soft and absolutely hydrating. Plus, it sort of goes with the whole muted down theme of the look today.  For added oomph, layer on a little gloss. I’m using my Gilded Cage Charisma lipgloss in Aurora.

Finishing Touches

This look is not complete without blush – I’m using the Revlon Photoready Cream Blush in Flushed. This blush has the beautiful texture of a gel within the pot and when you apply to your skin, it has a powder finish. I love this blush because of the texture and even the shade – I know! It looks so brightly (almost fluorescent) pink, but it translates beautifully to the skin. This blush is a really wonder for me and I think it’s being discontinued, which makes me sad.

The next step is optional – I’m going in for a subtle illumination to bring out dimension to my cheeks. I’m using my Laura Mercier Fall in Love Illuminator Palette. The lightest shade has pink flecks in it and lends a beautiful light with a pinky hue which goes with the entire look I’m going for today.

Finally, set with a powder. I’m using my Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint powder to set my face and bring a slight warmth to the skin.

Here’s the final look. What do you think?

Now, this is great for a day look, but what if you’re heading out? Well, just build up on the look … using the same palette smoke out the outer corner of the eyes with a deeper shade, add some lashes (Eyelure lengthening 116 lashes) and a up the oomph factor with an awesome lipstick (I’m using Tom Ford Alejandro). I’m linking up to an awesome bunch of bloggers here – so go check out what they have posted up for today.

Is this something you would wear? Which look do you prefer – the day look or the glam look? What will you be doing to celebrate Valentine’s Day?
